Honors programs for joint majors in French/Italian/Japanese/Spanish & Linguistics
Honors program
For each of these joint majors, the Honors program requires a total of 15 courses: 2 courses in addition to those required for the major. These 15 courses must be completed with a GPA of at least 3.7. Students who successfully complete the program will graduate "with Honors in [the major]".
The additional courses will include one course in Linguistics, a CAS LX 500-level course, plus:
-
for the French & Linguistics major: one additional French course (CAS LF 500-level)
-
for the Italian & Linguistics major: one additional Italian course (CAS LI 500-level)
-
for the Japanese & Linguistics major: one additional Japanese course (CAS LJ 400-level)
-
for the Spanish & Linguistics major: one additional Spanish course (CAS LS 500-level)
One or both of these additional courses may instead be an Honors independent study undertaken under the direction of faculty in the relevant programs. Honors students will be encouraged to engage in research that deals with the linguistic properties of the language of their specialization, thereby providing an experience in their senior year that allows for a synthesis of the work they have done in the two disciplines. Detailed proposals for Honors independent study work must be submitted and approved no later than six months prior to the anticipated beginning of the project.
Application to the Honors program
A student may apply to the honors program no sooner than the end of the sophomore year and no later than the beginning of the spring semester of junior year. For admission into the program, students must have completed CAS LX 250 Introduction to Linguistics and at least one of the core linguistics courses (CAS LX 502 Semantics I, CAS LX 510 Phonetics, CAS LX 522 Syntax I), as well as two of the required courses for French (necessarily including CAS LF 350), Spanish (necessarily including CAS LS 350), Italian (necessarily including CAS LI 350 or 351), or Japanese.
Qualifications for admission into the honors program include a GPA of at least 3.65 in all CAS courses—and minimum GPA of 3.7 in those that satisfy requirements for the joint major—that the student has taken at the time of application.

Upcoming deadlines
The deadlines are the same as for the Linguistics Honors Program.
Co-curricular Activities
Meetings of the Linguistics honors students (including students in all of the joint majors with Linguistics) will take place at least several times each semester. Activities may include colloquia featuring invited speakers as well as presentations, question-and-answer sessions, and panel discussions with BU faculty. In addition, we will maintain an email list of honors students, and we will inform them of other Linguistics events (both at BU and in the Boston area) that may be of interest. Students who participate in the Honors program in French/Italian/Japanese/Spanish & Linguistics will also be included in the activities of the Honors programs in the relevant language.
