Sara Mackenzie
Visiting Assistant Professor of Linguistics (2009-10)
Education
- BA, York University
-
MA and PhD, University of Toronto
Research
Dr. Mackenzie's research interests are in the area of phonological theory, particularly the nature of phonological representations and the relative contributions of phonetic and phonological properties in accounting for sound patterning. More specifically, her work deals with theories of contrast and similarity. She is interested in investigating the role that similarity and similarity avoidance play in motivating phonological processes and the extent to which language particular factors, such as inventory shape, contribute to the evaluation of phonological similarity. Her research in this area has focused on consonant harmony, cooccurrence constraints and ordering restrictions.
During Spring of 2009, Dr. Mackenzie was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Carleton College. This year, she is replacing Prof. Jonathan Barnes during his sabbatical leave.
